Top 6 Reasons Your Child Should Attend PreK at Bancroft
1. STEM activities throughout the day!
At Bancroft School, your PreK student will discover science, technology, engineering, and math principles through hands-on, integrated activities in and out of the classroom. In PreK they don’t just read The Three Billy Goats Gruff — they talk about the story, synthesize the information, and use simple design principles (and plenty of trial and error) to build a bridge that's strong enough to hold three goats and has a hiding place for the troll underneath!
2. Spaces designed for four-year-olds!
Bancroft’s early learning suite — the carefully designed PreK and Kindergarten classrooms along with a shared center space — is optimized for our youngest learners. The suite connects directly to the outdoor playscape, which features a sandy area, a hard surface for games, a playing field, and a wooded area. With two or more recesses each day, the children have abundant opportunities to play imaginative games, build, run, and explore nature.
3. Phys ed classes that incorporate literacy!
Our Physical Education Specialist accompanies the PreK class to the big gym, where the curriculum not only teaches locomotor skills, routines, cooperation, and self-advocacy, it also enhances literacy and supports classroom learning. Your child might run and tag certain letters posted on the wall, or practice overhand throwing after the teacher introduces the concept by reading Clean Up Your Backyard. In April, you’ll be invited to our Lower School Dance Assembly to see your child’s class perform a very special dance routine they’ve learned and practiced in gym class throughout the year!
4. Weekly trips to the library!
We’ll give your child their own library book bag to use when they visit the school library! Each week, our librarian reads a book to the children, introducing ideas such as character, plot, setting, and theme, while having them answer questions and make predictions. After story time, the children return books from their book bags and check out new ones for the week. As the year progresses, they gain independence in both choice and checking out materials.
5. Music class 4 days a week!
The music teacher visits our PreK classroom four times a week, helping students answer the question, “How do I participate in music?” Your child will learn the basics of beat, high and low sounds, tempo, and tone as they create movement and find their own voice. Our PreK performs a joyous musical number at our Lower School Winter Concert and again at our end-of-year closing exercises.
6. Daily yoga and mindfulness!
Through daily yoga practice with the PreK teacher, your child will learn calming breathing for energy, relaxation, and control of emotion while strengthening balance and self-awareness. Mindfulness encourages greater focus and awareness of the body, mind, and spirit in the moment.
