Space Pirates! 5th Grade Play

Every spring, our fifth graders spend their music and drama classes learning lines and lyrics, and discovering their performing skills with costumes, make-up, lights, and a large audience. With true teamwork, fun, and pride in this culminating Lower School performance event, our fifth grade students wowed the community with a marvelous rendition of Space Pirates! on May 4th and 5th.

The fanciful musical reveals the outer space adventures of Gabby, a girl who gets picked on for being different, and her classmates. As director Rachel Wagner wrote, the story “mirrors the journey these talented, curious, and unique actors have traveled in their fifth grade year. They have worked to value and honor differences in themselves, and others, to find opportunities to change their minds about people and things….” After the play, LS Head Beth Beckmann gave heartfelt thanks to Rachel Wagner, musical director Beth Gondek, the fifth grade teachers and parents, and especially the students, “who showed what hard work, focus, teamwork, and risk taking in front of an audience can look like!”

The class enhanced their learning this week in a Skype video conference with the play's author!
