In this Mandarin 1A class, students will first learn the pronunciation system of Mandarin Chinese—Pinyin—a Romanized transcription system used to reproduce the sounds of Mandarin. Students will also be introduced to the basics of the Chinese writing system, represented in characters. In addition, students will learn to start simple conversations on a specific set of topics, like self-introduction, family members, age, address, time, locations, interests and daily activities.
At the same time, students will attain knowledge about modern China, Chinese history and Chinese culture as well as participate in hands-on cultural activities, which include, but are not limited to, Chinese painting and calligraphy, celebrating Chinese festivals, Tai Chi, Chinese chess, Mahjong, Chinese food etc.
