November 2018 Newsletter

Dear Bancroft Friends,

As I walk though campus each day I am thrilled to see so many young people hard at work everywhere I turn.  They appear to be focused and attentive learners, engaged in their assignments and activities, and collaborating with one another to further their understanding.  I expect this, since we are an academic institution first and foremost.  We are thankful for our teachers who create a learning environment that is both challenging and supportive, making sure to pay attention to the needs, interests, and passions of the students they work with each day.

Triple Play
LS Students Building Together

From my office windows I have a view of the playground and the thoroughfare that connects like a main street through the center of our village.  From this angle I can see, and hear, the playful activities of students from across the grades.  These playful moments are equally important to the development of healthy and thriving young people.  In playtime relationships we see the strengthening of friendships, the importance of cooperation, and the growth of a social-emotional framework that will serve our students throughout their lives.

There is something special about a school that nurtures students from age 3 to age 18 on the same campus.  I know you feel that energy when you are here and I am thankful for your support as we work together every day.

HALLOWEEN ASSEMBLY 2018

The annual all-school Halloween assembly was packed with fun and surprises this year!  Activities included the PreK to 12 costume parade, themed faculty costumes, senior skit, and social concerns club teaching the little ones about trick-or-treating safety. Halloween is a cherished Bancroft tradition that brings an abundance of sparkle, creativity, and joy into our midst! Enjoy scenes from this wonderful event by clicking the photo collage above.

$8 MILLION OUT IN FRONT CAMPAIGN LAUNCHES!

A crowd of nearly 300 people roared with excitement on Saturday night when an $8M capital campaign goal was announced at Bancroft School's renovated Field House. Attendees were moved by students exhibiting their work, alumni sharing stories of their Bancroft experience, and by the vision shared for the future of Bancroft School.

The evening began with former trustee Dix Davis receiving the Milton P. Higgins Award for Distinguished Service to Bancroft School in honor of his four decades of work on behalf of the School. The evening continued with speakers Ken Davenport '90, Brad Gooch '54, and Seth Garfield '75 who regaled us with memories from their time at Bancroft and reflected on the School's impact on their lives. In Ken's words, his Bancroft experience "was better preparation and a better education that what I received in college."

We know that space can drive learning. And, with $6.2M already raised in early gifts, we fast-tracked the renovation of several communal spaces like the Field House and Music Wing, created a Digital Media Lab and an Upper School math classroom, and expanded our college counseling space. Achieving our goal of $8M will allow us to move forward with our plan to create flexible learning spaces across campus that support the collaborative, project-based work that is a hallmark of Bancroft School. It will also fund our programs via the Bancroft Fund and our endowment, which provides us the flexibility to respond to opportunities.

Just as we teach our students the value of participating in life at the School, we ask that every member of our community participate in our effort to keep Bancroft out in front! We're excited for you to a part of it! BANCROFT PLAYS FOR THE CURE

Play for the Cure 2018

For the tenth consecutive year, Bancroft teams participated in the Play4TheCure games last Saturday. Play4TheCure is an athletic fundraising event that partners with the National Foundation for Cancer Research. With the money raised from the teams, a donation is then made to help the fight against cancer with improvements in research and technology.

As the teams took the field, Bancroft was showing their support wearing pink jerseys. The fields were painted and the crowds cheered as the Bulldogs could not have asked for a more picturesque day. Varsity Boys and Girls Soccer, Varsity Field Hockey, and Varsity Volleyball all competed against Portsmouth Abbey. The Varsity Volleyball team had a fantastic 3-1 victory, Varsity Field Hockey and Girls Varsity Soccer tied, and although Boys Varsity Soccer was defeated 3-1, there was no lack of spirit or togetherness that day. Our Middle School also did their part to Play4TheCure as Boys and Girls Soccer, and Volleyball played against Applewild and Fay School.

Of course the Play4TheCure game means more than what the scoreboard shows, and our Bancroft Bulldogs were proud to compete for the tenth year, and join in the fight against cancer–a truly remarkable feat!
