Onffroy USRowing Scholastic Honor RollDescribed by his coach as “tough, disciplined, and ambitious,” Bancroft School senior Philip Onffroy, a resident of Shrewsbury, has been named to the 2017-18 USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll. Philip is one of only 34 students nationwide to earn this designation from USRowing, the governing body for the sport, based on excellence in both academics (grade point average and tests scores) and rowing.

“This honor is significant to the team because it demonstrates the sport of rowing can be a tool for creating a well-rounded, successful high school experience,” says Bancroft Coach Ellie Barr, who nominated Philip for the Honor Roll. “Philip deserved this award because he maintains focus and commitment to his team and academics equally.”

As a member of Bancroft’s Varsity Crew for the past four years, Philip has been vital to the success of the Boys 1st Boat, which won all but one of their races during the spring season. This multitalented student-athlete is also captain of the Varsity Boys Cross Country team, a member of the Bancroft Robodogs robotics team, and was recently named a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

“Having a Bancroft student-athlete honored for a second consecutive year makes us very proud,” said Tracy Jones, Director of Athletics, referring to the fact that Jacob Freedman ’17 earned the USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll distinction last year. “It shows the determination and dedication of our students, both in and out of the classroom, to excel in the things they are most passionate about.”

We congratulate Philip on this latest addition to his growing list of accomplishments.
