Dear Bancroft Parents and Friends:
Since writing last month, a great many events have occurred at Bancroft
that remind me of the extent to which this community pulls together.
On December 12th, two dozen faculty and parents volunteered their time
to work at the H1N1 Inoculation Clinic held in the Boone Room of the
McDonough Center. Thanks to Director of Health Services Janice
Morello’s expert organizational abilities, 114 students received the
vaccine during that morning. Thank you to Janice, as well as all the
parent and faculty volunteers who gave so generously of their time.
On the admission front, the stagnant economy continues, but our visits
are holding steady and even increasing over last year. We have welcomed
many highly qualified and talented students to visit for the day and to
experience the School for themselves. As you know, parents, alumni, and
friends of our School are the best recruiters, and we thank you for the
recommendations and help in making the admissions season a success.
Another Admission Open House is scheduled for this Wednesday night,
January 13th at 7:00 p.m., and there is still plenty of time to apply
for the 2010 school year.
As you may recall from my earlier
missives, one of our major goals this year is the continued expansion
of technology use at our School. Web sites and class portals are up and
running. And last Monday the faculty spent the day focusing on the
central role that technology plays in student life and learning and
honing their own skills. Outstanding speakers from Apple discussed
technology implementation in the classroom, challenge-based learning,
and best practices. Congratulations to Bud Brooks and Elisa Heinricher
in organizing what many here described as the best professional day we
have had in years.
Enjoy this January edition of Shorelines
complete with a review of other recent events. Happy New Year, remain
healthy, visit our Web site often, and here’s to a successful 2010.

Wrestling Returns
Varsity Wrestling Returns in Style

Bancroft Athletics welcomed Varsity Wrestling back to campus for the team's
first home match on Saturday, December 12th. "It was exciting to see so
many students and parents in the stands cheering on our team," says
Coach Chris Miller. "We did really well in individual matches, and two
of our wrestlers are currently undefeated." He explains that it will
take a few years for the team to be really competitive, mainly because
there are 14 weight classes, (from 103-275 pounds) and Bancroft's team
is fairly small compared to the other teams—but he is optimistic about
the future of wrestling at Bancroft and hopes that with the
rejuvenation of the Varsity-level matches, and the interest in the
sport generated by the solid Middle School program, more students will
be inspired to join the team.

Uber Bulldogs Win Judge's Award
Middle School Lego
League Team Competes at State Tournament

On Saturday, December 19, 2009, the Uber Bulldogs (MS FIRST Lego League
(FLL) team) competed against the top teams in the region at Robonautica, the Massachusetts FLL Championship Tournament held at Worcester Polytechnic Institute—winning a Judges' Award.
The Award was presented to the team for utilizing an innovative
approach to the research problem—how to improve goods, services or
people who are transported. The Judges' praised the team's creativity
and innovation for researching the Internet as a form of transportation
as students travel through the issues of the information highway,
including cyber-bullying. The team ranked 34 out of 64 teams in the
robotic challenge. According to Coach MaryAnn DeMaria, "The kids had a
great time, enjoyed
interacting with each other and with other teams, and are proud of
their performance. They are looking forward to next year."
The team qualified for the state tournament by receiving a "golden ticket" at the regional competition.
