Department Overview
The Bancroft Foreign Language department is
committed to students' acquisition of a modern or classical language.
Recognizing the importance of a global approach to education, the
department emphasizes not only communication skills, but also an
awareness and appreciation of other cultures and traditions. Through a
structured sequence initiated in the Lower School and Middle School,
the department designs and selects its course content around the four
skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Furthermore, the
Foreign Language Department strives to broaden linguistic and cultural
perspectives so that students might discover connections with other
cultures, gain self-knowledge, and recognize their role as world
citizens.
The department has identified
13 objectives based on its statement of purpose.
The department's philosophy and objectives reflect the school's mission
as stated in the booklet A Community of Learners "to prepare young
people to participate confidently and responsibly in an increasingly
complex society" The Foreign Language Department recognizes that
today's world requires a global approach to education that allows
students to make interdisciplinary connections while at the same time
gaining intercultural knowledge. By sensitizing students to cultural
differences and connections, both in classroom work and beyond and also
through
the exchange programs, we respond to the mission statement of
the school.
