April is Poetry Month
Give me the splendid silent sun with all his beams full-dazzling.

Fifth grade returns from Camp Kieve
Immediately upon returning from spring break, the fifth grade boarded a bus for Camp Kieve in Nobleboro, Maine for a four day, three night trip with their classmates and teachers. The students had been prepared for this milestone of the Bancroft fifth grade year by their teachers and parents, however, they may not have been prepared for the feeling of butterflies in their stomachs as they waved goodbye to their families and began the trip, which for many was the longest time they had been away from home. But meeting individual challenges is what Camp Kieve is all about. As the students returned home on Friday, their smiles and hugs for their families signaled they were ready to take on the exciting last few months as Lower Schoolers.
Lower School Encouraged to Play Hide and Seek Since children have the ability to see what adults no longer notice, Colin Novick, Executive Director of the Greater Worcester Land Trust, asked the Lower School assembly audience to become detectives by playing hide and seek with the Asian LongHorned Beetles. Outlining the problem of the beetles in the local neighborhoods, Mr. Novick explained that most adults no longer look at or climb trees, and that it is up to the children to investigate the trees in their neighborhoods for signs of the beetle. After explaining what signs to look for (holes, sawdust, and egg-shaped chips in the bark), he reviewed the three tools they would need to begin their detective work—a good pair of eyes, a beetle probe (better known as a pencil), and some tape to mark any suspicious tree.
Students Take Frogs to Dinner At LS Assembly, Mrs. Tupper's kindergarten class read their ideas about what a frog eats if you take it to dinner at Friendly's or the 99. Then they treated the audience to a chorus of the Speckled Frog song.
Music and Dance of Bali Comes to Bancroft
Gamelan Gita Sari: The Essence of Song The PFA Cultural series presented Gamelan Gita Sari to Bancroft last week. I Made Bandem, a visiting Fellow in Balinese Music and Dance, and Lynn Kremer, a professor at Holy Cross, performed with 10 musicians and 5 dancers (Holy Cross students). Dressed in colorful costumes playing hand-made instruments, the group performed three traditional Balinese dances, then led the audience in chants that demonstrated the the rhythmic cycles that make up the foundation of Balinese music.
