November 2016 Newsletter

Dear Bancroft Friends:

Thanksgiving is upon us, and I am thankful for all the talented, thoughtful people who share their gifts with our students. We've welcomed many distinguished guests lately, from award-winning authors and journalists to talented artists and craftspeople, all of whom have left a positive imprint on our children. Special visitors are an unforgettable part of the Bancroft experience.

But I admit to a deeper appreciation to all the people who are here every day.

Our faculty, staff, and coaches are mentors and champions for our students. Our students are there for each other and help to elevate the community for all of us. Navigating childhood and adolescence can be an exciting adventure when you are known and valued by an entire community of smart, caring, compassionate people. I am filled with gratitude and admiration for all who share their time, talent, and wisdom to strengthen this Bancroft community.

Trey Cassidy Greeting LS Students at Halloween Assembly

You serve as role models and inspiration, using your influence to help our students find the beauty in our world as they "learn to embrace confidently and responsibly the moral and ethical challenges of being lifelong learners, teachers of others, and citizens of an increasingly complex global community."

Happy Thanksgiving,
Trey Cassidy

Head of School

P.S. A big Bulldog shout-out this weekend to the volleyball team at the NEPSAC Semifinals, our New England Cross Country All-Star Race competitors, and the 70 participants in the Young Writers Conference!

HALLOWEEN PARADE & ASSEMBLY

Halloween

Halloween

We all enjoyed a spooktacular celebration of creativity, collaboration, and community on Halloween, with the incomparable Charlie A. presiding. Costumed students PreK–12 processed as faculty, staff, and parents looked on in delight. This year's faculty costume themes, clever as always, were: Emojis (LS); Dystopian Anti-Heroes from the Divergent Novels (MS); Songs (Performing Arts); and Sea Creatures (US). The Social Concerns Club humorously shared the dos and don'ts of safe trick or treating. Mr. Cassidy's take on the traditional "king" theme was a polka-dot jersey like the one worn by the King of the Mountains in the annual Tour De France cycling race. And the senior skit was Peter Pan. Afterwards, the seniors held a carnival in the Wood Gym for the little ones. A good time was had by all, including 5-month-old Ryann Des Chenes, who came as a pot of spaghetti and meatballs! (Ryann's mom, Stephanie, is on Bancroft's Admission team.) Check out the Halloween video!

Meet the Artist

It was a big month for the PFA Cultural Series! Our students met Andrea Pinckney Davis, New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of children's and young adult books; Eric Foner, eminent historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of books on American race relations; Alex Charalambides, slam poet extraordinaire and popular Bancroft Writers Conference mentor; and our very own Mackenzie Melemed '13, an incredible pianist currently studying at the renowned Juilliard School!

We also had Meet the Artist Day, a beloved annual event that brings local artists and crafters to campus with plenty of opportunities for children to observe, learn, and participate.

MS Arts & Athletics Day & Meet The Artist

A highlight of Meet the Artist Day for our Middle Schoolers was experience of creating an amazing, all-over-campus tape art installation, led by artists Michael Townsend & Leah Smith.

Watch the video to see our other guest artists: Hugh Naggar, spun & blown glass; John Glabus, wheel thrown ceramics; Christopher Whitehead, comics; Lou Leelyn, upcycled plastic accessories; Ron Rosenstock, photography; Haruo Shiga, origami; and Kara Bigda, painting. Enjoy!

Bulldogs will not be outdone by a little weather! After the 8th Annual Play4theCure fundraiser games for cancer research were rained out in October, the Bancroft Athletic teams regrouped, rescheduled, and Played 4 the Cure on November 7th! Between t-shirt sales and donations, their final tally was $2,008 for the National Foundation for Cancer Research! "It's the most we've ever raised," said Coach Jane Gerhardt. "I'm so proud of all the hard work and school spirit that helped us exceed our goal!"

8TH GRADE PLAY  – "BORN TO BE WILD"

The annual Eighth Grade Play is a great example of project-based, collaborative learning that engages the students in all aspects of a theatrical production. After many weeks of rehearsals, set design and construction, lighting, costumes, and mask making (!) the eighth grade class treated our community to a brilliant comedy about the inner lives of animals — Born to be Wild by Bryan Starchman.

"The best part," as Head of Middle School Trevor O'Driscoll said, "was the shared laughter that brought all of us, including every Bancroft student as well as parents, teachers, family, and friends, together."  We look forward to seeing these talented students playing their parts at Bancroft (on stage and off) for years to come!

DONATIONS TO "BE LIKE BRIT"

When the eighth grade World Geography class learned about the Be Like Brit Foundation, a Worcester–based charity dedicated to the orphans of Haiti, they wanted to help. The foundation is named for Brit Gengel of Holden, a college student who was killed in the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Our students led a bake sale that raised $200 for Be Like Brit. They welcomed two guests from the foundation, who spoke about their work realizing Brit's dream of a home for the orphans. Today, 66 children are growing, learning, and thriving in an earthquake-proof orphanage (shaped like a B for Brit) in Grand Goâve, Haiti. After the students presented the check for $200, Bancroft handed over the keys to our two former team buses, which will be shipped to Haiti to provide much-needed transportation for the orphanage.
